Grimethorpe Karate Club has been instructing students from the Barnsley area for over 15 years. We Practice the Wado-Ryu style, meaning ‘Way of Peace’.
Karate is a fun and rewarding way to stay fit, build confidence and defend yourself. A typical karate session involves learning to perform various punches, kicks and blocks and practicing our ‘Kata’ or sequences of moves. There are also opportunities for students to try out ‘Sanbons’ with a partner, which means performing attacks and blocks, and sometimes to spar with each other. See the syllabus page for details of the different techniques we learn, or for more on the history of Karate click here.
In our club we have gradings every four months, and students who work hard are able to progress up through the various ‘Kyu’ towards 1st Dan or black belt, gaining different coloured belts along the way. See our events page for details of gradings and other events.
We welcome new members of any age, so if you would like to give karate a try, come down on Wednesday or Thursday evenings or ring for a chat with our main instructor, Sensei, Brian Walton. Click here for session details and contact information.
